You can workout inside, but why would you when the ultimate gym is right at your fingertips in the great outdoors? Nelson is known for its ruggedly stunning landscape and the setting is not only gorgeous to look at; it’s also an amazing spot to get out in and explore. Pulpit Rock has long been used by locals as a workout venue.

Of course, Pulpit Rock is not just about knocking out your next sweat session. The trail offers breathtaking views and a moderately difficult climb. There are tons of switchbacks along the way, so this isn’t a straight up climb. The trail is said to be well worn and clearly marked. That said, there are some areas that would likely be quite challenging for children or those with mobility issues and it is somewhat steep overall.

Those who get to the top are rewarded with a large area to take awe-inspiring photos. There are also benches and lots of room to stop and have a snack. Anyone who wants to continue the hike further can keep heading up the hill towards Flagpole. Even more stunning views await those who make the extra effort.

The distance to go up and back down is 3.6km if you’re going as far as Pulpit Rock. If you make the extra trip up to Flagpole, then the total distance for the round trip is 5.8km. The elevation is +338m to Pulpit Rock and +655m to Flagpole.

If you’re going to be visiting the area and need accommodation in Nelson, then look no further than the Best Western Baker Street Inn. The property is newly renovated and consistently ranks among the top hotels in the Nelson area. We offer elegant and spacious rooms, a fitness centre, hot tub, onsite dining, pet-friendly room options, and much more.
