While most of us can definitely enjoy the laid back activities of life that come with winter holidays (such as going for a soak in the Ainsworth natural Hot Springs!), there will always be a soft spot for our inner child who wishes to frolick, play, and explore. To cater to this inner adventurer, we’ve put together our favourite activities winter can offer in Nelson. We hope you get to indulge in at least one of them!

Skiing

Nelson, besides being a charming little town, is also home to some of the ‘best skiing on the continent’ according to the New York Times. Why, you ask? Well, they are famous for getting a consistent average of around 30” of snow per year in steady increments, making the powder exceptionally inviting. More than that, White Water Ski resort, besides offering regular terrain for skiing, snowboarding, and tobogganing, also boasts excellent backcountry, cross country, and Nordic skiing. They even have specialized setups for cat skiing and heli-skiing. Talk about thrilling!

Caving

For the experienced adventurers looking for something new, we recommend a guided exploration tour at Cody Caves. A true natural wonder which takes ‘ecotourism’ to the next level: winter caving offers an exciting look into a new year’s worth of intricate ice formations unseen anywhere else, after a challenging hike through snow-filled gullies.

Fishing

Nelson is also a unique place in that in the winter, amidst freezing conditions, their lake does not freeze over! By (convenient) consequence, it means that seafood lovers can go winter-fishing! It is recommended to go to the centre of the lake, where some fish come from 500 ft deep. If you are patient and quiet enough, you may even be able to catch a 20 lb Dolly Varden or Gerrard Rainbow Trout!

At Best Western, we are so proud to call British Columbia home and be a hospitable haven for so many Canadians. We enjoy the environment we’re in so much so, that we’ve taken extra special care to protect it in our daily operations. To prove this, we’ve become Green Key certified (3 keys worth!) and we are always looking to improve. This way, not only is your stay comfortable, but it is consciously made too!
